We are pleased to announce this cycling program for youth, managed by the Northbrook Park District. Youth cycling is a two-part program on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Young athletes will focus on training and skills on Wednesdays and compete in races on Fridays. This is not a learn-to-ride program.

Wednesday Night Training and Friday Night Racing 
As riders train and progress weekly, races become more competitive. The races will be a team competition, with riders assigned to teams on a weekly basis. The coaching staff and skill levels will determine race assignments, types, distances and handicaps, rather than age or gender. Winning teams receive prizes.

Who's Eligible? 
Riders who wish to train and race must be at least 7 years old and less than 16 by December 31, 2018. Riders falling outside those ages may ask for coaches' approval based on cycling experience and maturity. Experienced riders whose skills exceed the program will be referred to Thursday night licensed races. Riders outside the age and experience range will be excluded for safety reasons. The coaches' decisions are final. 

Requirements and Equipment
Riders must have a well-maintained, working bicycle, well-fitting helmet, appropriate sports clothing (not loose-fitting) and shoelaces tucked in. Racing bikes with racing cleats and pedals are not required but are suggested, as are gloves. Riders should show up with tires pumped, chains cleaned and brakes adjusted. Failing to bring a well-maintained bicycle delays the training and racing for everyone. On a limited basis, some give-one-get-one recycled shoes, pedals and other equipment may be available.

Participants can have any bike, but this is not a learn to ride program.

All riders must take a skills test and post lap times. This allows the coaches to assign appropriate group levels for training and racing. Riders who wish to retest and reapply may be reconsidered, based on an assessment of their improvement, maturity and potential. 

•    This is a 10-week program (no racing on 6/21 and 7/5, and no practice on 7/3)
•    Meet at the track at 6 pm on Wednesdays and Fridays
•    Wednesdays: Warm-up from 6 to 6:30 pm. 6:30 to 7:30 pm training. 7:30 to 8 pm advanced training.
•    Fridays: Registration, bike check and warm-up from 6 to 6:30 pm,. 6:30 to 7 pm is lap times (for handicaps). Racing is 7-8 pm.
•    If you miss Wednesday training, make arrangements with the coaching staff to check skills and post lap times before racing on Friday
•    During training, the Chalet will be open
•    If thunderstorms are detected, the Chalet will be used for shelter until the all clear is signaled. If the weather doesn't clear, the event is canceled
•    In case of extreme heat, the pool will open to registered racers

Fun and Sponsorship Opportunities
We plan to have child-friendly food available on most Friday nights, and we will open the pool after the racing on at least one night. We also are asking local businesses to sponsor one night of the summer program. Sponsors may offer hats, water bottles, food, or other ways to make the evenings more enjoyable. We will post a schedule after sponsors are finalized.
