Early Racing Number Pick-Up & Opening Night Pre-Reg + BIKE SWAP!

Make Opening Night easier on yourself and the NCC by registering and pickup up your racing number early on Monday May 12th! The NCC will be at the track from 6 to 8 pm. The Monday night clinic will take place as scheduled.

This year we are also hosting a bike swap. Have things you want to sell or are you looking for some new gear? Come by and see what is available!

We encourage everyone to renew your USA Cycling license now if it has expired or is close to expiring. Additionally, now that USA Cycling is doing a rolling renewal, your license may expire in the middle of the season. Renewing the day of a race or right before registering is difficult for our registration program to capture as USAC does not update their rider database in real time. Please help us out and try to renew your license before it expires! Log on to your USAC account to renew now or check when your USAC license expires.

Women’s Introduction to Track Cycling Clinic

Our popular Introduction to Track Cycling clinic returns for 2025 and will take place Saturday, May 31st (rain date June 1st) from 8:30 AM to 12 PM. This clinic is for our women, trans, femme, and non-binary community and will introduce the track bicycle, velodrome basics, proper track etiquette, and will feature mock track racing, training techniques and group riding skills. Women’s Intermediate Track Clinic*NEW for 2025

New for 2025, we are introducing an intermediate track clinic to give women the skills necessary to successfully design and complete their own workout at the track. This clinic assumes attendees have participated in events at the track (clinics or races) and have basic knowledge of the track.

EVANSTON BICYCLE CLUB

The People: The Evanston Bike Club was formed with 30 members in 1971 under the sponsorship of Evanston’s Recreation Department.  Today we have more than 500 members who live in Evanston (35%), Chicago (20%), Wilmette (10+%), Skokie (5+%), Glenview (5+%) and other places (20+%).  Our membership is about evenly split between men and women.  What hasn’t changed since 1971 is EBC’s focus on safe, recreational cycling for adults.  Fun. Friendship. Fitness.  And, OK, Food.

The Rides: Every day but Monday we have rides leaving from Evanston or Wilmette week in and week out.  Our official “season” runs from St. Patrick’s Day through October, but the hardier among us ride year round when weather permits. From time to time on weekends, rides may start at “remote” locations in the northern suburbs or southern Wisconsin.

We offer rides in a broad range of paces and distances. Some of us cycle leisurely to an interesting site or restaurant; some of us cycle to achieve speed or endurance goals; some of us do both. The vast majority of our cycling miles are ridden on roads, though some of our rides may include bike paths or trails.  We generally follow a “no drop” policy except on the very fastest of our rides.

There are also opportunities for multi-day destination rides with EBC.  In recent years, we’ve offered summer rides in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and winter rides in Arizona, California, Texas and Florida.

Sharing and Caring: The Evanston Bicycle Club has been the organizer of the North Shore Century ride since 1984.  It is our pride and joy.  It is entirely produced by 100+ club member volunteers.  We welcome about 2,000 riders each year and are delighted to see their joy in the journey cycling through the northern suburbs and up to Kenosha. The 2024 Northshore Century will take place on Sunday, September 15th. For more info and to register, go to www.northshorecentury.org

On the 3rd Tuesday of every month, we meet at the Evanston Ecology Center to catch up on each other’srecent adventures, have some snacks and hear a cycling-related program. We also publish a monthly newsletter.

Week 8 (6/20): Junior Invitational Points Race Sponsored By Garner Northbrook Bicycle Club

The 12th Annual 30 Lap Junior Invitational Points Race features a variety of prizes, including $1000 payout spread across the entire field sponsored by South Chicago Wheelmen, and primes and is open to all juniors (cat 1-5) with track racing experience.

This race has become a staple of the Northbrook Thursday Night Racing calendar in large part due to the continued support of Tim Harrison and Kenny Labbe, as well as all of our juniors, their parents, friends, and fans. Thank you very much!

The podium, featuring all juniors, will follow the Masters race in session 3. 

The Garner Northbrook Bicycle Club shares a passion for all facets of cycling. For many years the Club hosted the Friday Night Velodrome Development Series. Our members continue to volunteer at various events, including the Chicago Cyclocross Cup Series events, Wheeling Heritage Park CX, now the George Garner Memorial CX. 

Sunday Morning Rides

Join us in Northbrook on our Sunday Morning Road Ride (no drop, casual pace). The group leaves at 7 am sharp every Sunday from the George Garner Cyclery: Northbrook location at 1111 Waukegan Road. Ride is year round dependent on weather. We do not ride if it's raining, snowing or below 35 degrees. Average speed is about 17-19 mph and the distance covered will vary from 30 to 50 miles depending on how everyone is feeling. The ride is a no drop ride, so all are welcome. Local racer Jafet Torres and his wife Raquel Bagdocimo rallied friends and teammates to create a team dedicated to creating a space for other Latino cyclists in Chicago. Hello and happy racing! A mentor once advised me that the way to really expand one’s practice in fulfilling ways is to stay in touch with one’s community. I’m pleased to be back in the track cycling community after such a long hiatus and happy to be supporting the velodrome and all of its dedicated volunteers in the process!

Perkins Law Office is comprised of me, Jeff Perkins, an attorney who is licensed in Iowa and Illinois. I focus on estate planning and administration, elder law, wills, trusts, and probate. After spending a few years in a wide range of legal fields, I was drawn to working directly with people who value the role an attorney plays in their own life as well as the lives of their loved ones. I’ve found purpose in being accessible to people who wish to plan their affairs or need to navigate all the processes involved after losing a loved one.

Week 5: Chris Mosora Memorial Points Race s/b Bouledogue Tout Noir

CHRIS MOSORA MEMORIAL POINTS RACES in memory of local legend Chris Mosora whom the world lost in 2020.

Chris was well known throughout the Chicagoland area as an accomplished track and road racer and was never one to turn down any race, especially those with “individual” and “time trial” in the title. Indeed, Chris was known to show up to road time trials with a fixed gear bike, both baffling and garnering awe from his competitors. On any given Thursday night, Chris could be found at the velodrome, likely at the pointy end of the field and launching seemingly endless attacks, which was his style. He also was known for tinkering with his position and gear, and we’d like to think he pioneered the extreme shallow drop bars which are prevalent today. Chris was always in the mix in the Category 1/2 Rider of the Year competition, handily winning the competition in 2010. He achieved local legend status when he won the 2010 Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race against a stacked field of strong local and regional racers, previous champions, and even an Olympian.

Off the bike, Chris was soft-spoken with a witty and dry sense of humor that always would leave a smile on your face. Chris was an admitted audiophile and a jazz lover, who took tremendous pride in his home's sound system. He was a person who always had something wise to say, and when he gave advice, you listened. 

Chris and his wife, Stacy, had relocated to Tucson, where they continued their tradition of spreading love and happiness via the bicycle with their coaching business, On The Box Coaching.

Bouledogue Tout Noir — Racing with Precision and Guts since 2007

One cold, wintry day, a handful of cyclists were discussing the challenges they faced living and training in Chicago. Instead of bemoaning the daily commute, the rides on pot-holed streets strewn with glass, and the miserable winters; they decided to band together and turn these challenges into strengths.

On the race course, the team aims to prove that one can build a competitive amateur cycling team regardless of the environment and careers of its members. The team name, Bouledogue Tout Noir, translates to “All Black Bulldog” (considered a fault in pure-bred bulldogs), and reflects both the tenacity and interests of the team’s riders. Riders have placed in and won Elite National, Masters National, and countless State Championship events, showing that high-level goals are not just limited to full-time athletes. 

While Bouledogue riders always race to win, they have found that victories come more often in an environment of mutual support, friendship, and solidarity.

Former Ten27 Cycling Club Donation Will Lower Race Entry Fees For Thursday Night Racing Women’s Fields

The Northbrook Cycle Committee (NCC) is excited to announce a recent donation from the former Ten27 Cycling Club to sponsor the majority of the entry fees for the 2024 Thursday Night Racing program’s women’s fields at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome (ERV) in Northbrook, Illinois.  

The donation will cover the majority of the Thursday Night Racing entry fees for the women’s fields (P/1/2/3 and category 4/5 fields). Racers will pay $6 (+processing fee) every Thursday night for the entire 2024 season. The 2024 Thursday Night Racing season kicks off on May 9th. 

Recognizing the financial barriers that many cyclists face in pursuing their passion for racing, members of the former Ten27 Cycling Club have taken a step to support the cycling community and ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the pursuit of excellence in the sport.

"We are grateful to the ERV and NCC who have sponsored and nurtured our riders through the years,” said representatives Chuck Judy, Jim Linn, and Chris Mailing. “We have many lasting memories of racing there and appreciate the time and effort the NCC and volunteers contribute to the sport. We hope this donation is beneficial in supporting the growth of your program and its riders."

The NCC would like to thank the members of the former Ten27 Cycling Club for their generous donation.

2024 Event Calendar and Other News

We are exactly one month away from the start of the 2024 ERV track season! Monday clinics will get underway on 5/6, early number pick-up will also be on 5/6, and Thursday night racing gets underway on 5/9.

After a shortened 2023 season, we are excited to once again offer a full 4 months of clinics and racing.

NEW for 2024 is our Time Trial Saturdays! These will take place on Saturday 6/15 and 7/27 (no rain dates), racing will begin at 9 am. Organized similar to our popular Sprinters Omnium Series, these days are meant be a low-key environment with no prizes, just an opportunity to test your ability against the clock. All timed events will be offered (200m flying TT, 500m TT, 750m TT, 1000m TT, 2K IP, 3K IP, 4K IP, 4K TP, and Team Sprint). The order of events on the day will depend on registration. More details to follow.

The PACT Cycling Team was formed in 2007. The purpose of the PACT Cycling Team is to promote amateur bicycle racing competition in Chicagoland area. The PACT Cycling Team has members from various nationalities and skill levels. PACT’s goals are to encourage cyclists to become involved in competitive level training and racing, promote bike races in the Chicagoland area, road races, criteriums, and time trials, motivate experienced riders stay involved, and enjoy racing for fun, for health, and for life.

Greta Neimanas is a two-time Paralympian, two-time World Champion, and lifetime member of xXx Racing-Athletico. Greta started with xXx in 2005 and raced with the team through for five years before joining a pro team (Peanut Butter and Co., Twenty 12, now called Virginia's Blue Ridge TWENTY24 Pro Cycling). Greta made the World’s Team in 2006 and lived/trained at the U.S. Olympic/Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for six years, winning numerous medals at various championships between 2006 and 2015. In 2013 she won the Time Trial World Championship and in 2015 won the Scratch Race World Championship by gaining a lap on the field. She eagerly hopes that someone takes a lap to win this race. Greta currently coaches road cycling for the U.S. Navy Wounded Warrior Program and at U.S Paralympic development camps.

Roger DeLanghe is an icon of the Midwest race scene. Since his emigration from Belgium years ago, Roger worked tirelessly to promote bike racing throughout the region, culminating in the addition of the Quad Cities Criterium to the USAC National Racing Calendar. The Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race is a premier salute. Brutally fast, this 50-lap Scratch Race pays the top 25 riders and offers the largest total purse of the season, brought to us by PACT. Crowd favorites are the 4-place midway prime - bell at 26 laps and the 2-place gambler prime - bell at 2 laps to go. The DeLanghe Lion listing was created to honor racers who return year after year to compete. Points are assigned by placing, and consistency is awarded to those able to maintain or improve their placing.

Hello and happy racing!

A mentor once advised me that the way to really expand one’s practice in fulfilling ways is to stay in touch with one’s community. I’m pleased to be back in the track cycling community after such a long hiatus and happy to be supporting the velodrome and all of its dedicated volunteers in the process!

Perkins Law Office is comprised of me, Jeff Perkins, an attorney who is licensed in Iowa and Illinois. I focus on estate planning and administration, elder law, wills, trusts, and probate. After spending a few years in a wide range of legal fields, I was drawn to working directly with people who value the role an attorney plays in their own life as well as the lives of their loved ones. I’ve found purpose in being accessible to people who wish to plan their affairs or need to navigate all the processes involved after losing a loved one.

For George Garner, growing up during the Great Depression in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California with his three siblings, held no hint of his future lifelong obsession with all things bicycle. However, from 1939 on he raced bikes around dirt tracks and over the Hollywood hills, losing his front teeth and breaking a few bones along the way. George served with the Marine Corps in World War II and witnessed the landing on Iwo Jima and the occupation of Nagasaki. George's love of the bicycle continued into adulthood when he opened his first bike store in 1947. In 1953, George and his friends helped build the Encino Velodrome in Encino California, nearly overturning a steamroller on themselves in the process. George's relationship with the great Schwinn Bicycle Company grew and in 1965 he moved to Northbrook, IL. Sales awards from Schwinn weren't enough. George built his family like his business, with love and dedication, profiting in the form of three sons and five grandchildren.

George never forgot his first love, the bicycle, spending hours and quite a few dollars supporting another area velodrome, this time in Northbrook, as well as winning many more accolades along the way. Before Father Time took away his ability to pedal, George spent every morning riding a Schwinn Airdyne to the tune of thousands of miles. And for those reading this who never had the chance to know George, you just might learn what really made him tick, by getting outside and riding a bike.
